The Pachamama Army was created to protect the incredibly important coastal Andean forests of Ecuador that are fast disappearing because of monocultures, as well as deforestation for logging and cattle.
The Pachamama army is a young group highly trained in ecology and agroecology and have been working for five years from their base of Salinas de Guaranda on river restoration activities as well as training young children and farmers on the importance of protecting the environment.

Mission.- “Our urgent goal is to reforest the subtropical forests in the region were we are located in the Andes which are not only the country´s lungs but the source of water and rain that give life to the coasts and sierra of Ecuador.” says Geovanni of the Pachamama Army.
“We are working on regenerating our ancestral land and its connection to the pachamama while working with the youth and farmers to create awareness that organic farming is healthier, better for the environment, and more productive in the long run than the use of chemicals or pesticides.”
Activities While Volunteering:
– Create seed banks of most ancestral plants that are disappearing due to deforestation as well as the invasion of hybrid plants and grasses that are introduced in large quantities and effecting the natural flora and fauna.
– Bio-construction of eco-friendly cabins using materials like recycled wood, stone, and sand to not harm the environment
– Work Agriculture in farms with medicinal plants
Average Day Volunteering:
Each volulnteer works 6 hours a day and the activities vary depending on what the volunteer wants. There are three different farms in the region that are being uesd for reforestation and organic farming purposes and each place food and sleeping facilities are provided.
*This volunteer program is an opportunity to reach a greater connection with nature and the pachamama which is the reason why drinking alcoholic beverages is not permitted on the farms. You may however drink outside the farm in public places.
Cost to Volunteer:
The price of volunteer work with the Pachamama is $310 per month. This includes accommodation, 3 organic meals per day, and all training during the program.

Volunteers need an intermediate level of Spanish to voluteer at the Pachamama Army. Your Spanish does not have to be perfect, all you need is the fundamentals that allow basic communication. Here your Spanish skills will no doubt improve very rapidly.
